My best friend introduced me to a new type of workout machine. I had never heard of them before, and I was intrigued! I wanted to see what the fuss was all about, so I headed over to my friend’s home gym for the tour.

He had a Versa climber machine. At first, I wasn't sure if I should be impressed with a vertical climber. It looked fairly simple for something that my friend was claiming to be extraordinary.

What Is a Vertical Climber?

A vertical climber is the new workout equipment on the block. It mimics the actions of rock climbing, giving the user an excellent cardiovascular workout that improves endurance and works major muscle groups at the same time.

There are plenty of options available for vertical climbers, so you can find one that seems like it was built just for you. No matter your available space, you’re sure to find a climber that will work.

This makes these machines versatile and effective for a variety of users.

What Exercises Can Be Performed?

2. Next, position yourself on the machine. Place a foot on the lower pedal and grab onto the handles. Holding on tightly, place your second foot (and weight) on the second pedal.

Adjust as needed until you’re in a comfortable position. Keep your body in a straight line and keep your weight back. Don’t angle your body in a similar manner as the machine.

This could result in damage to your knee joints or other injuries.

3. Before you head into your workout full-steam, take a few minutes to warm up. You can either do a few short strides, taking care not to bounce from side to side, or do some longer strides to really work out your leg muscles as you get a deeper warm up.

4. Next, begin your workout. Mimic the act of rock climbing, extending one arm up while raising the opposite foot. Repeat on the other side.

You’ll want to decide on either short workouts or high-intensity training workouts. I suggest beginning with shorter workouts until you get a feel for using a climber machine.

Everyone’s body responds differently to a new workout, so give yourself enough time to adjust. But once you feel that these shorter exercises are becoming effortless, you can begin more intense workouts.

These include working out at an intense pace for a few minutes and then resting for a minute before repeating.

First, treadmills and exercise bikes will take up much more room than a vertical climber would. Keep this in mind if space is a concern.

Second, treadmills and exercise bikes are louder. They can also be more intense on joints or previous injuries when compared to a vertical climber.
