No matter your height or gender, this exercise bike can most likely accommodate you. There is a weight limit, but this is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment I’ve ever used. My entire family squeezes in at least one workout a week on this bike.

Are There Any Health Risks Associated with Using an Upright Bicycle?

As with any form of exercise, there are a few health risks you should keep in mind before beginning an exercise routine.

Pulled Muscles

If you don’t take the time to stretch your muscles, you’ll most likely wake up the next day very tight and sore. Luckily, this is completely preventable. Always stretch and never use a resistance level that’s too advanced for your current skills.

Heart Stress

If you’re not cleared by your doctor for cardiovascular exercise, biking is not the right option for you at this time. It really gets your blood pumping and works out just about every muscle in your body, including your heart.

If you have any concerns, check with your doctor and make sure your heart is healthy enough for cycling.

While there are risks when biking, there are many more health benefits that you’ll experience. For example, you can expect your stress levels to almost disappear with regular biking sessions.

What Muscles Are Being Developed When Using an Upright Bicycle?

You’re using a whole bunch of muscles when completing an upright exercise workout! It’s not just about your legs. Take a look.

Upper Legs

We'll start with an obvious muscle group. You’re working your quadriceps and hamstrings each time you pedal on an upright bicycle. The more resistance you use, the harder your legs have to work through each rotation.


If you really want to work out those glute muscles, lean forward a bit as you pedal. You’ll really feel the burn, and you’ll love how you look in jeans in no time. Just don’t put the resistance too high, or you’ll risk a sore bottom.

Lower Legs

Of course, you’re working your lower legs as well. Your calves have to push and pull every time you pedal. If you make an effort to keep your toes pointed downward when you pedal upwards, you'll work the muscles even more.

If you have trouble remembering to do this, invest in some cycling shoes. The motion should become natural. If you want to really tone your calves, spend part of your time pedaling while standing up.

Core Muscles

You might not get a six-pack from using your upright bicycle, but as long as you maintain proper posture, your abs and back will still get a great workout. Make sure you keep your back completely straight and keep those abs tight.

You can also lean forward a bit to help focus on your back muscles, but keep in mind that not all upright bikes will allow you to do this safely.

Upper Body

You’ll be using your upper arms to support your body as you pedal. This helps to tone your upper back, shoulders, and upper arms. Again, depending on the model, this might not be very intense.

If you really want to make sure you’re working every muscle group you can, try doing some curls or overhead raises with some light hand weights while you cycle. Just make sure you have a well-balanced bike with a sturdy frame.
