This means that if you’re very thin or very overweight, you’ll not likely be recording accurate data.
They’re also hard for the average person to use. Unless you have been trained to use one, and use it every day, there’s a good chance you’re not performing the test correctly. For better results, follow the directions below:
1. To use a caliper, grab a piece of skin, preferably at the top half of the arm, and pinch. Place the caliper around the skin and press down until the two arrows line up.
2. Record your number. Each hash counts as two.
3. Release the skin and repeat several times. Take an average of your measurements.
4. Repeat the process in at least two other areas of the body, such as the navel, thigh, or hip.
5. Plug the numbers into the equation that came with your caliper or with one designed for your particular body type. This will give you your body fat percentage.
A body fat caliper can come in handy at times, but if you have the chance to own a body fat analyzer, don’t settle for questionable data.
Which Is More Accurate: Body Fat Calipers or Body Fat Scales?
In my experience, and I’m sure most others will tell you the same, body fat scales are more accurate. Their advanced technology will always give you a more accurate reading.
But you have to measure correctly and make sure you’re using the most accurate body fat analyzer available.
This means that you need to use your body fat scale first thing in the morning. Don't eat or exercise before using it.
You should also make sure you’re constantly updating your weight in the profile. I don’t recommend using your scale every day. Use it once or twice a week to measure your progress.
Body fat calipers can be accurate as well, but there is a bit of a learning curve when using them.
Try using both types of device and see how your results measure up. If there is a large difference between your two readings, it’s time to do a little research to see which technique you’re struggling with.

Here’s another technique you can’t use at home, but has some advantages if you can get access. An x-ray can help read bone mineral density, lean body mass, and, you guessed it, fat mass.
